Western Classical Music – An Introduction to the Orchestra

In this talk you will explore the fun and exciting world of orchestral music.
Although it may sound alien, you’ve heard more orchestral music than you
realize. It is played on the big (and little) screen, and adds to the drama
and excitement of movies and television. Western classical music often
sounds BIG and complicated. There can be over a hundred instruments
playing different notes, but they all seem to be going in the same direction,
creating amazing musical sounds. In this talk you will explore the world of
western classical music and the different personalities of the instruments
that comprise a symphony orchestra.
Speaker: Vira Santoke is a private piano tutor in Southern California. She has been a volunteer
with the Philharmonic Society for over 30 years, journeying from school to school,
transforming her deep passion for music to a lifelong gift for thousands of eager young
students. She brings the same dedication to her cultural community where she serves
as secretary of the Zoroastrian Organization. When not teaching or volunteering, she
finds pleasure in life’s simpler activities like reading, cooking and strolling in the park.
