The author of the Bhaja Govindam is Adi Sankaracharya, one of the greatest philosophers to have graced the land of India. He lived only till the age of 32 but by then had established Advaita Vedanta as one of the most prominent philosophies of the land. Of the many texts he wrote, the Bhaja Govindam belongs to the category of a stotra or devotional song. It is said that he spontaneously composed it on coming across an old man trying to understand the abstruse book on Sanskrit grammar by Panini.
Bhaja Govindam literally means 'Seek the Lord'. In the poem, Sankaracharya brings to our attention the perennial pursuit of acquisition and enjoyment that we are all engaged in. He provides practical guidelines on how we can uplift ourselves from this quagmire. In and through this, he brings forth the sublime philosophy of Advaita Vedanta.
